EIGHTEEN
Silent through summer, though other birds sing
In their separate ways both Police Superintendent Leeyes and Detective Constable Crosby had some difficulty in coming to terms with Detective Inspector Sloanâs behaviour on the Wednesday morning.
He spent it sitting at his desk in his office.
Detective Constable Crosby was the first to disturb his reverie.
âWhere to this morning, sir?â he asked from the door, car-keys at the ready.
âNowhere,â said Sloan, ignoring a pile of reports on his desk. âOh, Crosby, you could go and check that nothing more on the whereabouts of Miss Kate Camus has come in.â
âIf she was important, sir, wouldnât the old lady have had her address?â
âPerhaps, Crosby. And if wishes were horses, beggars could ride.â
âSir?â He sounded injured.
âOne, we donât know that Miss Kate Camus remained unmarried â she could be Mrs Anybody for all we know â and two, Mrs Garamondâs address book, if she had one, isnât at the Grange any more. We checked.â
âStolen?â
âVery probably.â
âTo stop us finding her?â
âOr to enable others to find her.â
âFirst?â
âThat is among my worries, Crosby.â
âYes, sir.â
âThe fact that Miss Camus was of an age to be working during the last war means that she, too, will no longer be young.â
âIf sheâs still alive,â said Crosby.
âBut,â pronounced Sloan, âthe fact that if she is alive she will now be old does not mean that she is not entitled to live out her days as she wishes rather than have them truncated by violence as would seem to have happened in the case of Octavia Garamond.â Sloan waved a report in his hand. âDr Dabbe and his friend Professor Agate seem sure that Mrs Garamond was murdered.â
âYes, sir. So am I.â
Sloan looked up, surprised. âYou are, are you? Why so sure?â
âMen in pubs donât ask total strangers to drink with them by way of a celebration at the end of the evening,â said Crosby simply. âItâs not natural. Theyâd do it when they first came in, wouldnât they? Stands to reason.â
âTrue,â agreed Sloan. Perhaps theyâd make a detective of Crosby one day after all.
âI reckon, sir, that he slipped Mrs Shirley Doves a Micky Finn so sheâd sleep extra well that night.â
âThen youâd better check on how the description of your stranger with something to celebrate jibes with that of all the other males in the case. Except the doctor. Mrs Doves knew him.â
âYes, sir,â said Crosby, jangling the car-keys hopefully. âAnd then?â
âAnd then you can come and help me with some paperwork,â said Sloan, thus ensuring a prolonged absence on Crosbyâs part. âIâm going to be working on two lists â what we know and what we donât know.â
âYes, sir.â
âAnd one list is a good deal longer than the other â¦â
âYes, sir.â
âIn fact, what we know would go on one side of a piece of paper.â
âWe do know thereâs something that someoneâs looking quite hard for,â said Crosby. âAnd small.â
âBut not what it is.â
âSomething pretty valuable, though, sir, or there wouldnât have been all this fuss.â
âIf by âfussâ, Crosby, you mean murder, then yes, valuable to someone.
